We use it within our firm as well as suggest its use to our clients.

5

We've been using Sage and the prior Simply Accounting for over 30 years, and I've found the software to be very seamless with our clients' needs as well as the ability to get support. The software is a good value for money. With the screens visualizing what an invoice would typically be viewed as, it is very easy for our clients as well as us to provide instructions for invoicing for our customers. The financial reporting is very robust, with strong internal reporting and the ability to link externally to spreadsheets. Inventory management is fairly easy to understand and implement, thanks to the inventory module and its integration with accounts payable and accounts receivable, making the inventory management feature within Sage a very favourable one when we notify our clients about which accounting packages they should use.

Pros:

We are an accounting firm, and we use Sage accounting for our clients' bookkeeping, including payroll, as well as support for our client files. We find that the user interface is very easy to understand, which allows us to explain to our clients how to use Sage accounting.

Cons:

We would love to see a register feature which would allow quicker entry of journal entries within Sage Accounting, as well as the corresponding journals.

Great tool for small not for profit organizations

5

Overall, our experience with Sage Accounting has been positive, particularly for managing day-to-day financial tasks in a straightforward and efficient way. The platform is easy to use, which made onboarding staff and volunteers relatively smooth, even for those without a strong accounting background. For a not-for-profit organization, it has been effective in handling core functions like tracking income and expenses, reconciling accounts, and maintaining accurate financial records. The automation features, such as bank feeds, have helped reduce manual data entry and improve efficiency. In summary, Sage Accounting has been a reliable and cost-effective solution for our current scale of operations, but organizations with more complex reporting or compliance needs may find it somewhat limiting over time.

Ratings Breakdown

5

Ease of use

5

3

Customer support

4

Functionality

Pros:

We also appreciated how user-friendly the system is—staff and volunteers with varying levels of accounting experience can navigate it with minimal training. Features like automated bank feeds and real-time financial visibility help reduce manual work and improve accuracy, which is important when resources are limited. Finally, the affordability and scalability make it a practical choice for a not-for-profit. It provides the core functionality needed to maintain transparency and accountability to stakeholders, while still being flexible enough to grow with the organization’s needs.

Cons:

What we liked least about Sage Accounting was its limited functionality for not-for-profit–specific needs. While it handles basic bookkeeping well, it lacks more advanced features such as fund accounting, detailed grant tracking, and restricted fund management, which are often essential for not-for-profit organizations. We also found that reporting can be somewhat inflexible. Customizing reports to meet the specific requirements of donors, boards, or regulatory bodies can be challenging without additional manual work or exporting data to other tools.

Reasons for choosing Sage Accounting

We valued the overall cost-effectiveness. Sage’s pricing is generally more affordable than many competitors while still offering core accounting features and support, making it a practical choice for organizations working within tight budgets.

Not good enough

3

It does what we need it to do for now. However, there are several parts we are currently unhappy with and would like to see some improvements. If these improvements were to take place, maybe we would consider upgrading to use even more functionality and pay a premium for a premium service. The way it is now we are actively considering moving away from Sage and finding a new/better solution for our needs.

2

Functionality

Pros:

It is user friendly and I was able to learn how to use the software quickly. It is quick and easy to enter and record payment of bills, sales invoices, and create journal entries.

Cons:

There are some unresolved errors and issues that have been around for a while. This is unacceptable for a paid (subscription based) service. There is a cheque payment outstanding for years now. Our payroll addon is not functioning properly; you are unable to post it to the accounting side, and the workaround given by the Sage team is a manual workaround journal entry. We expect more. Financial reporting is also lacking. The custom report function is abysmal (even includes spelling mistakes) and the templated reports (specifically general ledger) reports are not easily adjusted or manipulated when exported/imported as a csv.

Reasons for switching to Sage Accounting

It was not me during the switch but I think the main consideration was ease of access as the cloud version allows much easier access from anywhere without having the software installed.

I had chosen it as my accounting software after years of Simply experience. Some aspects have improved since then, but value for money is definitely not there for a business our size. Which isn't a fault necessarily, but the inflation of costs is definitely an issue, and I will probably leave the platform before the end of the year, hopefully.

The software's main drawbacks include limited multi-warehouse inventory features and occasional system slowdowns during peak usage times.
